This is a demonstration of Unreal Tournament III: Black Edition with OpenAL Soft's HRTF using the IRC_1037 tables. While in many ways UT3 jumped the shark for the Unreal series (proven by having the lowest playercount in 2018), it has some truly phenomenal 3D positional audio. UT3 has the most accurate binaural audio of the entire Unreal franchise by far. It's to the point where you can actually feel the prescence of missed rockets exploding right behind you. The sound mix is still a little unbalanced compared to UT2k3, but as long as you're playing a map with relatively quiet ambience your ears should be fine.

The biggest mistake Epic ever made was not pushing OpenAL support further. Instead, 95% of all UE3 games used FMOD which has absolutely horrible positional audio by comparison. By the early 2010s, UE3 switched to XAudio2 + X3DAudio and the audio quality has never been the same as the first batch of UE3 games. Some UE4 games like PUBG are trying to make up for this with external HRTF plugins, but the positional accuracy is still nowhere near as good as OpenAL Soft with its customizable HRTF tables.
