Ubuntu 13.10 VS Windows 8 : Portal 2 Comparison with a GTX 680
66Video showcasing the frames per-second difference of running Portal 2 on Ubuntu versus running it in Windows 8. Both tests have Portal 2 running maxed out at 1920x1080.
On the Ubuntu side of things, I used the newest Linux driver which is 334.21.
On the Windows side of things, I used the most similar Windows driver which is 334.89.
Portal 2 was set to exactly the same settings in both situations.
No screen recorders were involved. All recording was done with the Nikon AW100 camera ( thus the low quality video, best I can do at this point in time ).
NOTE: Portal 2 on Linux is still in Beta mode, performance may change once being officially released.
Both OS's are running on the exact same hardware, with Portal 2 being on a 1TB WD Green (one for Ubuntu, one for Windows).
Summary: Ubuntu 13.10 with Unity initially takes the lead against Windows, but then starts to struggle behind it with the higher poly models and the smoke. The fps for both always stay above 60, but ideally there shouldn't be such drastic drops in fps.
This video is just to highlight the performance I get in both Operating Systems. They are NOT representative of what anyone else may experience, whether current, past or future. AMD graphics users and Intel graphics users may experience vastly different results.
I am not infallible. It is likely that I made mistakes. I did however put a lot of time into this to try and get it right. I hope you can take something informational out of this.
