Does Unity 7 affect gaming performance? How does it compare to Xfce 4.12? In this video, I decide to test just that. Highly recommended that you watch this in at least 720p.

Everything in this test was kept the same, except for the DE (Desktop Environment).

Both systems are running the exact same Ubuntu 14.04 64bit install, with the latest AMD Catalyst 14.04 drivers at this time.

Left 4 Dead 2 was running at 1600x900 on this 5 year old HD5750 AMD card.

This video is not meant to represent an entire community of hardware and software configurations. However, it can provide you with some insight on the performance gains, loss or indifference in general.

Nvidia and Intel users may experience vastly different results. I am not infallible, but hopefully this video is with minimal human error, so as to be useful.
