Ultima IX: I found out about an available German speech patch
Till yesterday, I thought the playthroughs with German voice acting were about having had the official German translation when it came out and copying the files over to the GOG version. However, I found this:
https://wiki.ultimacodex.com/wiki/Ultima_IX_auf_Deutsch
Now, the experience will be even much better. I'd think I was the last person to find out about it, but since nobody asked why didn't I have the speech on, maybe they didn't know that this patch was available.
The way I installed it:
Only the zip downloaded seamlessly from the site where the patch is, plus I got malware alert, so I didn't use the auto-installer. I made a copy of my GOG UIX folder and copied over only the movies and sounds folder contents.
I understand a full file substitution would have provided updated German grammar, some translation fixes and better positioning of the text, maybe among other things, but since I'm halfway in the playthrough, I wanted to minimalize the chance of something getting corrupted.
So far it works like a charm.
Story time:
Ever since I decided to raise the number of the languages I speak, it became a passion to find translations for games I play, if they don't come with them to begin with. (I always liked setting the language to this or that when it was an option.)
Since I started with learning Spanish (Creo que ha sido un éxito relativo, pero siempre cabe aprender más y repasar.), I eventually got a non-malware download for the Spanish text. Since I learned a lot of English while playing initially, I expected a lot from this one, too. As a Hungarian teenager, I just couldn't understand things like "I have been given XY item" or "the Heart of Compassion resides with the mayor of Britain" and while the Spanish text seemed more direct, it still indeed taught me a lot.
So now that I'm onto German, I got the text files for that, too. I started to play it around June of this year. Now I was deep-searching the internet for certain UIX info that I would require for a video I had in mind and although I found just half of what I wanted (not enough for the video), I now saw in the wiki's German translation section this patch. Profit.
Though the wiki states that for Japanese, there is only text and I see videos with Japanese speech, too, as well as Russion speech/text which I don't see mentioned anywhere. Also, the wiki misses the info that Hungarian is also among the languages that got fully translated manual, but no text or speech for the game, itself. If I finally found it, I could make a comparison video because as I remember, there are indeed things to show.
Now all I can hope that if I ever get to some acceptable level in German (with the three genders and the adjective inclination it's a heroic challenge) and remains place in my head for another without forgetting the already known ones (or if I start another without reaching intermediate level in German, for any reason), then it will have at least the text for Ultima IX.
Also, with more time and a more actor-ready voice I could tell such things in the video, itself, instead of writing several walls of text for each small video. Because this way really I am just adding forum posts and the video is just an excuse to be able to upload it to YT. This was not the original plan when I started these videos, I just realized that this way it's fewer time. Still, this is also somehing I need to better in the new year.
