It’s easy to understand why so many gamers are jaded. It can feel like the only games being released are either clones, pseudo-sequels, or just straight-up rereleases. Most feel like they were developed in a sterile lab. It’s extremely rare that you find a game that feels truly inspired. Well, that brings me to Unravel and today’s one-minute game review. This is one of those rare games. When you play Unravel, you can just tell that the development team had a genuine artistic vision. They dedicated themselves to the vision and made it a reality. The gimmick of the game is that you control a little yarn creature, and, as you travel, a strand of yarn is continuously unraveling in your wake. You throw, tie, and swing from the yarn in order to traverse the levels and solve puzzles. The gimmick is great, but it's the atmosphere of the game that’s most impressive. This is hands-down one of the most beautiful games out there. The music is perfectly paired, changing and morphing from calm and serene during puzzle sections to fast and excited when the action ramps up. Unravel ultimately presents an overarching theme of reflection. The game wordlessly encourages the player to take time and appreciate the small things in life: from day-to-day experiences to the people who we share these experiences with.
