I have never used a controller setup like this before.

I went to play this new indie Roguelike called Paper Nebula, and I was met with a conundrum.

Should I play this game with a controller or a keyboard?

Using a controller, movement with the thumb stick felt great, but this is an arcade-style scroller with a lot of shooting.

And, although I grew up playing games where rapid button mashing was a way of life (I’m looking at you, Mario Party), I’m not as spry as I once was, and my thumb started to get tired.

So, I tried the keyboard. Now, the shooting felt perfect. I could even use multiple fingers on the space bar to really unleash a barrage of shots.

But I missed the fluid movement that I got with the thumb stick.

But then I had an idea. What if I used the controller with my left hand for movement, and the keyboard with my right hand for shooting?

I’ve never played a game using this method in my entire life, but it was perfect.

It got me as close to that classic joystick & button arcade experience as I could get.

If you’d like to give this a try, Paper Nebula drops on Steam on October 20th, and there is a free demo out now.
