Vampire: Master of Darkness has a few flaws here and there, but I think that it's an amazing game quite frankly. Being the Game Gear's answer to Castlevania, this game is brimming with such wonderful background details and splendor that it could easily have given the NES Castlevania games a run for their money if marketed better.

It has dark backdrops with amazing detail for a Game Gear game (moving water, trees blowing, papers ruffling, large sprites, cutscenes), great music, and gameplay that clearly rips off Castlevania, but did I mention that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? You play as the young Dr. Ferdinand Social, a psycologist and apparently a skilled demon killer, who is forewarned of the approaching evil on his Ouija board (???). He gets a message that warns of the wake of Dracula and knows that supernatural powers are at work. Being the well-dressed and good chap that he is, he takes it upon himself to investigate and immediately starts killing gangsters, zombies, ghosts, and all other manner of strangeness.

Much like Castlevania, you get various sub weapons which vary in usefulness (bombs, pistol, etc.) and can even destroy weak walls to unveil hidden goodies. While Dr. Social doesn't have a killer whip, he does have a pocket knife which can be upgraded to a nasty axe, this wicked stake type thing, or a rapier, which have different uses (except the crappy basic weapon). You also can grab crystals that destroy everything on screen and the different level designs make this game really stand out. Everything is dark and brooding, as it should be. The addition of cutscenes to move the story along is icing on the cake. Hell, you can even soft reset the game. Why do you need it? You don't, but the option is there!

The game is pretty easy for the most part, but there are no checkpoints on levels, which can be kinda frustrating. You also have to be careful going up and down stairs, as you have to start at the first step. While controlling your character is easy, falling into a hole because stairs are situated near one is just as easy. I think this game is awesome. Enjoy.
