The Bf-109 had a few great features about it, it was fast, and it was well armored. It had a very sleek and aerodynamic shape which cuts through the air with ease. The draw backs of the Bf-109 was that it was heavy, and it was not very maneuverable. The landing gear configuration was a problem for most pilots, because you had to master the rudder controls in order to take off. When you try to take off in realistic mode, the Bf-109 tends to sway to the left or the right. If the aircraft sways to the left, you need to use the right rudder to stabilize it.
The best way to use the Bf-109 is by using it as a point attacker, you can use its superior speed to select a target and dive into it or fly into it with guns blazing. This is a great way to fight against fighters that are more maneuverable than the Bf-109. Another draw back about the earlier Bf-109s was the lack of fire power, it only had 1 20mm cannon, and 2 machine guns. The Bf-109 Gs were good, because it had a 30 mm cannon. Another issue I have with the Bf-109 series is that it cannot carry a lot of ammo. The Bf-109 doesn't have long range, because it is a pretty heavy aircraft with a very power engine. It was built for maximum performance.
