"Watching a Video Game Is Basically Playing It" Says Polygon
Coming in with a massive hot take today... Polygon writers are deranged.
This article has been doing the rounds: https://www.polygon.com/24170801/watching-is-playing-twitch-youtube-lets-play-no-commentary#:~:text=Both%20playing%20and%20watching%20result,PC%20and%20up%20into%20heaven.
The key here is they're not claiming that there is value in watching someone playing a game (no issues with that, it can be entertaining), it's that they claim it's the same experience as playing it.
Obviously this is ludicrous and their motivation appears to be around "accessibility" and that you're an elitist, gate keeping person if you suggest that watching someone play a game is not the same as experiencing it for yourself.
This mindset contributes to games being way too cinematic these days, with an emphasis on making everything brainless including puzzles, level design and general gameplay.
Kotaku Australia was shut down recently, can Polygon be next?
