WHAT?!? You Can Use The Konami Code on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?!
Perhaps the greatest cheat code of all time for the NES has to be the Konami Code. Created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto during the development of Gradius for the Nintendo Entertainment System, countless games have used this code or some variation thereof. The code was added during testing to verify that the programmers could actually get through the game due to the advanced difficulty level. Well, other Konami games have famously used the Konami code, such as Contra, Life Force, and as we all know, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project. Wait, you didn't know there are a use for the Konami Code in TMNT III? Well, you can, and you can use it to get to any level. Let's take a closer look because yes, you CAN use the Konami Code on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
By using the Konami Code in Turtles 3 it provides you with access to the Options Menu. To access this menu in the US version, you enter the Konami Code while on the title screen. Simply enter Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B and Start on the Player 1 controller, and select your character on the next screen. Once you've picked your turtle, you will be taken to a screen which will give you the option to start the game at any stage, adjust the difficulty level, set the number of lives or listen to any of the game's music tracks.
One of the interesting things about this use of the Konami Code is that in the Japanese Famicom version of the game, players can access the options menu from the main menu without the need to input any code. The stage select feature is replaced with a "game type" setting, which simply sets whether friendly fire is turned off (type A) or on (type B). On the NES version, this friendly fire toggle is handled by having two different 2-players mode.
