Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses is in Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch! Because, of course they are. Unlike with Cuphead or Sans, this is clearly motivated less by Masahiro Sakurai’s love and devotion to the character, and more to do with Nintendo’s sense of brand synergy.

It’s interesting to hear how Masahiro Sakurai talks about Fire Emblem characters. While he’s clearly a huge fan of the series, there have been instances in the past where Nintendo executives have insisted upon the inclusion of Fire Emblem character in Smash Bros games – whether or not the Fire Emblem games in question are actually complete.

Byleth is very clearly a product of a desire to advertise Three Houses through Smash, as Masahiro Sakurai was instructed to include the character while the game was still in development. He got to play an early build of the game a little, but by his own admission, it wasn’t really enough to get the full sense of the game as a whole and all of its branching storylines.

Kind of a shame that we did the cutesy, love-inspired story of Cuphead yesterday, and this more corporate story today, huh? It’s a bit less fun to end on “because Nintendo wants money” as a moral.

Either way, we love you and we thank you for watching.

Toodles!
