Over the years, Nintendo has made different changes to thieir hardware to reduce costs, eliminate unused features, and overall, improve their systems. This dates all the way back to the original Nintendo Entertainment System. See, the NES, and in Japan the Famicom, both had mid-cycle hardware changes to make things less expensive and overall better. The result was the AV Famicom and the NES Top Loader. One other major change with these systems was to the controller, where Nintendo abandoned the hard, square edges of the original controller and introduced the Dog Bone Controller. But why has Nintendo never changed other controllers? One controller in particular screamed out for a change, and that was the Nintendo 64 controller.

From the get-go, people made fun of the N64 controller, showing their lack of understanding for it. Jokes about needing 3 hands to use it properly were popular, but more than that, there was an underlying hardware issue. See, the analog stick, which defined the N64's games, was also it's weak spot. With people playing intense games such as Mario Party, the gears inside the Analog Stick quickly were turned to dust. The wobble and loss of precision made this a terribly weak point, not just of the controller, but of the system.

While Nintendo themselves never released any sort of upgraded N64 controller, there were others who tried to improve the design and make it better overall. Hori made an excellent N64 controller which eliminated the trident design, simplified tbe layout, and provided a better overall experience. Other companies more recently have released improved and updated controllers for the system, most notibly the Brawler64 from Rretro Fighters.

But te question still remains, why did Nintendo themselves never release an updated or improved N64 controller? Was it arrogance? Lack of concern? Or were they ok with the 3rd party solutions? Share what you think in the comments
