Why Has There Not Been A New Version Of THIS GAME In Over 20 YEARS?
26I have been a fan of Motorsports pretty much my entire adult life. I've gone to local short track races, I've gone to NASCAR events, and I've even been to some Formula 1 festivities. As a fan of all things racing, one of the things I love to do is play racing games on my home video game system. For years, I've been able to enjoy NASCAR games, dating back to Bill Elliot's NASCAR Challenge on the NES, NASCAR Racing from Papyrus on the PC, and later on the PlayStation, and Formula 1 has had a long relationship with video game console manufacturers. One series that has not had a very good track record in recent years with racing games has to be the IndyCar series. It's truly puzzling because the track product has quite possibly never been better. So Why Has There Not Been A New Version Of THIS GAME In Over 20 YEARS?
I think part of the blame must go to the split between IndyCar and Champ Car/CART. See, in the mid-1990s, the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a guy by the name of Tony George. He wanted to change open-wheel racing in the US and make it about American-born drivers driving on oval courses in the United States. IndyCar racing then, governed by an organization called CART, had become more of an international affair. This lead to a division between IndyCar and CART. The better drivers were in CART, but they were missing the Marquee event in the Indianapolis 500
in the mid-2000s, the two organizations merged back again into one, adopting more of the strategy of the Indy Racing League over what CART was doing. However, the IRL did bring in things such as road course races, and once again became a Haven for international drivers.
Another problem with IndyCar at this point was the fact that the TV license never really had great demand, and viewership was down. People had to struggle to find IndyCar racing on TV, and oftentimes they couldn't in their home markets. As such IndyCar racing suffered record-low viewership for a long time.
Thankfully, all of this has changed, and IndyCar racing is better than it has ever been. The racing is exciting, the drivers are prolific, and I dare say it is a better product than NASCAR is right now.
With all this being said, isn't it time we get a dedicated IndyCar racing game on home consoles again? I think the fans deserve it and have been more than patient. Would you play something such as this? I sure would!
