When it comes ot my gaming takes, I have to admit I sometimes have a different look and take on things. From my dislike of RPGs and Breath of the Wild to hating on Coffee and the original Xbox Controllers, I have my own thoughts and opinions that sometimes fly in the face of conventional wisdom. With the impending launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 this week, does its release mean the Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite are technically retro? I'd say it does. Let me explain.

For me, I consider something retro when a successor comes out. So, looking back in the day, when the Super Nintendo was released then the original NES became retro. The N64's release made the SNES retro in my book. When the PS2 came out, the PlayStation then became retro in my book.

However, some people look at things differently regarding when they are retro. Some people consider that a system needs to be out of production before it can be considered to be retro. For them, the Nintendo Entertainment System wasn't retro until after the NES Top Loader was released and then went out of production. Similarly the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, along with the Xbox One X and Series X were modern systems at the same time, even though they were part of different console generations.

Others, still, say that something can't be retro until a certain amount of time has passed and all factory support has ceased. Using this criteria, the Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 have just recently become retro. Using these last to methods, however, would mean that the original Famicom wasn't retro until the early 2000s as Nintendo was still servicing and repairing these units.

When do you consider a system to have achieved retro status? Are you with me and consider that a system is retro once it's been replaced in the market? Do you think that a system needs to be out of production before it's retro? Or does a certain period of time need to pass before something is retro? Share your thoughts in the comments!
