[World Record] UV Fast Speedrun of Doom E1M8 in 0:56 {No Comment}
This was a great run, lots of in-fighting, and some pretty good movement overall. After nailing E1M8 on UV Max with a time of 1m08, I figured that UV Fast had to be faster; especially because of the last baron room and the amount of in-fighting potencial. I still wasn't sure I could get sub-1 minute though.
I spent a good 3 hours studying 3 aspects of this map: I wanted to manipulate the RNG at level start to get consistent results; I wanted to know what was the fastest strategy to use at the last baron room; and I wanted to have a better setup for the final SR50 jump that would ALSO consistently skip the medikit grab.
I wanted manipulate the RNG at the level start in order to kill (almost) all demons with one single explosion and rush directly to the door. But unline in UV Max, I couldn't reproduce this behaviour in UV Fast. This is because monsters move much faster and make many more P_Random calls while moving and coliding with each-other. I literally tried 52 starting setups, at least 10 attempts each, to see if I could get a good result, and nothing would work. This was quite a frustrating ordeal.
So I settled for plan B, and used the 2-phase-explosion strategy used by [Angus, 2003]. The start is the weakest part of this run. I was slow exploding the barrels, moving down, and opening the doors. 3 seconds could be saved here (or 5 seconds even, if someone finds a working setup for plan A...!).
Regardless, the rest of the run went perfectly: I woke up only the left demon at the middle section, grabbed the chaingun and ran back out without getting blocked. The wall-run went quite smoothly and both demons were following me, so I could use the lift's waiting time to kill them *just* in time.
When studying the final room, using the barrels to kill specters proved to be a lot slower because it would cause a lot less in-fighting. The best strategy was clearly to hide in the corner and hit only the specters that were the most unlikely to be hit by the barons, so the barons would get the aggro. This also worked perfectly in this run: lots of in-fighting from the specters. One of the barons died almost exclusively to spectre damage! Luck was definitely on my side there.
I also got hit just the right amount of times to get to 6 health for the final SR50 jump. The medikit-skipping setup was riskier than the normal setup: ocasionally it caused me to fail the jump altogether, and fall down. Thankfully it worked and I skipped the medikit, so when I entered the portal, the level ended immediately.
I think that getting a 0m53 is possible with this strategy. And maybe 0m51 with a working plan A at the start. To get below that however, I think that a new strategy needs to be found.
