^ The next to the last portion of my replay down nostalgia lane. I added the secret path to the swamp only accessible after the villagers disappear.

Story: We returned from the Jungle haggard and worn down, but with a bounty of treasure between us all. When we finally made it back to the city we realized just how bad it was, our people had lost what was left of their limited grey matter. Insanity was the common tongue for our people now, yet somehow in their addled states they had managed procure some amazing pieces of equipment and even scrolls to boost my own arsenal.

We decided we had best outfit ourselves as best we could before speaking to the Duke, something told us if we did not...who knows. Turns out we was correct in assuming this. We spoke to Marmillian before speaking to the Duke and he claimed the cause of the insanity was an ancient creature known as the Burrower, and warned us that everyone had lost their minds, even he seemed a bit touched in the mind to be honest. Still he handed us a scroll, unfamiliar to even me, he said it could summon the Immortal Ka in our hour of need against the Burrower.

With information and a powerful scroll in hand we made our way to the Duke. The Duke unlike Marmillian had lost all pretense of sanity and threatened to have us slain if we did not return with allies and exiled us from the city until we did! He sent us to the plains of fire, the one we spied on numerous trips back and forth in our journey, but with the rings we found in the Azcan's temple we had no fear of the flames. The dragons and fire giants and other fiends on the other hand...at one point during our exploration of the northernmost cave we was nearly slain by a wraith I believe. Yet we found what we came for at last, allies! And it was time to return with the great news.

However our city was destroyed, wrecked beyond recognition, and our people gone? We saw no bodies, but everyone had vanished. As we searched the graveyard we noticed an open grave, when we looked inside we saw stairs descending down. We followed that dark passage grim and beaten, weary from our adventurer but with no choice to push on. Eventually after many harrowing encounters we found a door that led to the outside, we could hear bugs and water nearby. It had led us to the swamp near the forbidden cave we had spied earlier, we decided to make camp and prepare before we attempted to enter its dark halls.
