WUT?!?!?! Xbox S Controller Is BACK! Hyperkin Duchess S Controller!!
Each year kicks off with one of the biggest consumer electronics shows of the year, CES in Las Vegas. It's where you get to see the newest tech, prototypes, and upcoming products that manufacturers are working on. If you are a fan of the original Microsoft Xbox S controller, Hyperkin has something that will definitely be of interest to you. They are releasing an officially licensed Xbox S-inspired controller called the Duchess S, and it's compatible with the Xbox One and Xbox Series of consoles. Let's take a closer look because the Xbox S Controller Is BACK!
One important thing to address here early is the fact that the Duchess S is designed to work with the newer generation of Xbox consoles. It features a USB-type connector on the end, not the original Xbox Figure 8-shaped connector. As such this is not a direct replacement for the Xbox S controller but an alternative controller for you to utilize on newer systems. There are Xbox to USB adapters out there, however, I cannot tell what the compatibility might be until I get one of these to test out. It is also important for me to point out that this is a wired controller, not wireless, so you will be tethered to your system while you play.
Initially, it looks like the Duchess S will be available in two different colors, black and white. It appears to have all of the exact same button placements and layouts of the original, except for on the left-hand side of the grip. These appear to be capture and share buttons similar to what the Xbox One and Xbox series of controllers feature.
The sticks and the triggers offer a lot of new technology under the hood. They utilize all effect sensor technology which should mean they are more precise, more accurate, and less prone to wear and tear. They utilized these sorts of sensors in the xenon controller released in 2023 which performed quite well. The Duchess S also features on-board rumble for compatibility with games that support the feature.
While no pricing or release date has been announced, I would expect to see these around the 40 to $50 range and available in mid-2024. I don't know any of this for sure, this is my prognostication based on their prior product releases. Is this something you would be interested in? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
