X-Men vs. Street Fighter [PS1] - play Apocalypse in 1-player on different backgrounds
This is an alternative play-through using Apocalypse in 1-player Battle Mode in the PS1 version of X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Read on below for more information...
Apocalypse is the one and only boss of the game. He is an unlockable playable character, but he cannot be used in Battle Mode (the game's arcade mode). Instead he can only be used in Versus Mode.
This is an alternative play-through using Apocalypse in 1-player Battle Mode, which allows him to appear on different backgrounds other than the 'Apocalypse Now!' one. Unfortunately, the drawback is that you only get to see his arm and the satellites when he is on the other backgrounds.
Despite being unselectable in Battle Mode, you can successfully play through and complete the game with him. He has an ending, but it appears to be a flawed version of Ryu's ending.
===== Additional Information =====
---- As mentioned earlier, you only get to see his arm and the satellites when he is on the other backgrounds.
---- When on the other backgrounds, he does not have the full range of the field to move into. It's like he is confined to his own space.
---- On certain backgrounds, his Drill move will mess up parts of the background up due to the scrolling. An example of this is the Dead Or Live: The Show background.
---- Unlike the other method in my previous video, this time he operates at a normal speed instead of being 'sped-up'.
---- If you complete the game with Apocalypse, you'll get a flawed version of Ryu's ending. Some of the colors are wrong and the dialogue box shows the wrong character's names.
---- Once you reach to fight Apocalypse at the end, only one of them has the body but no head, but the body is flawed. The other Apocalypse has the head but no body. This time, both Apocalypses start the fight later.
---- After you defeat boss Apocalypse, you will then fight Apocalypse AGAIN because he is considered your 'partner'. This time, both of them do not have their main body sprites or heads.
---- He does not have the unused Forcefield move in this version of the game. This is obviously because he is made to be a playable character.
---- The Japanese version of the game is known as X-Men vs. Street Fighter: EX Edition.
===== About Apocalypse =====
Famous Marvel cartoon villain who can change into a giant. Wonders around the world pretending to be a God because he can.
Gameplay-wise, he is a very slow, clunky and static character. All of his moves will leave him in a vulnerable position, which is understandable because he is a giant boss after all. The satellite lasers (which are CPU-controlled) are his best moves. The Drill is excellent as well - providing you catch the opponent with it.
===== About PS1 X-Men vs. Street Fighter =====
Due to the RAM limitations of the PS1 hardware, huge cuts needed to be made in porting the arcade game to the console... and the main cut is the fact that you cannot switch characters during a fight. Therefore it operates more like a traditional one-on-one fighter, consisting of separate rounds. Tag elements such as the Counter and the Team Super Combo are still possible though.
Other drawbacks include many animation sprite frame cuts, making some moves look a bit choppy and jerky. If you're used to the Arcade or Saturn versions and have a keen eye for sprites (like myself), you'll definitely notice the cuts.
New features of this version includes the ability to cancel Special Moves into Super Combos, and Super Combos into another Super Combo.
