Previously, Link explored his home town, Ordon Village. Through helping his fellow villagers, he acquired a Slingshot, Colin's Fishing Rod, and a Bottle half full of Milk. When he returned home, he showed Talo, Malo, and Beth the Slingshot. He also retrieved his Wooden Sword, which Rusl had honed and left for him.
Outside his house, Link talks to Talo, Malo, and Beth again (time 1:15). Concerned about the village's monkey problem, they now beg to see a demonstration of Link's basic sword moves. This is essentially a tutorial for the player, of course.
After the tutorial, the kiddos talk to Link some more (time 3:38). Just then, they notice a girl monkey, and the three tykes run off after her. Just swell.
Now, Link must mount Epona and follow the kids (time 4:21). Beth and Malo quickly give up the chase in the vicinity of the spring north of Link's house.
After talking to them, Link continues north to Faron Woods in Faron Province (time 5:24). Mounted on Epona, he must jump the fence and continue north. After going past the spring, the path branches. A Deku Baba and an opened gate guard the entrance to a dark cave to the northwest. The path to the northeast leads towards central Hyrule.
At the entrance to a dark cave to the northwest, he finds Talo's play wooden sword (time 6:51). Before heading through this cave, though, Link will need a source of light.
Along the northeastern path, Link will find a strange fellow named Coro (time 7:40). He will give Link a Lantern ... for free! Of course, the reason that the Lantern is free is that Coro is trying to drum up sales for lantern oil. Pretty clever.
To demonstrate the Lantern's usefulness, Link can light the fire under Coro's soup pot (time 9:11). Be sure to put the Lantern away afterwards so it doesn't waste oil. Coro will sell oil refills for 20 Rupees.
Also, Link can scoop up some of Coro's Nasty Soup, but it will likely hurt him when he eats it. The ways leading north from Coro's hovel are both blocked off.
So, Link heads off into the dark cave (time 11:37). He can use the Lantern to light the torches along the way. Look out for Keese, Deku Babas, and rats. He will have to use the Lantern to burn down a couple of spider webs that are blocking the way.
Along a side path to the west, Link will find a chest containing a Yellow Rupee, worth 10 Rupees (time 12:59).
At the northern end of the cave, Link exits to the central section of the woods (time 13:24). Here, he will find his first humanoid enemies, Bokoblins. They are pretty easy to just hack and slash, which is just as well since Link has no shield yet. A lot of them will drop Blue Rupees.
To the west, he finds the path to the Forest Temple (time 14:57). However, the gate is locked. Nuts.
In the northeast, Link finds the entrance to a small cave (time 16:24). There are a couple of Keese and a Bokoblin to destroy in here.
After beating them up, he opens a chest to obtain a Small Key (time 16:57).
Also, he lights the torches on either side of the key's chest (time 17:08). Doing so causes a chest to appear. Opening it, Link acquires Piece of Heart #01! In this particular entry, Link must collect five Heart Pieces for each new Heart Container. To complicate matters, there are now usually about two Heart Pieces in most dungeons.
Anyway, Link now opens up the gate in the west (time 19:30). Beyond, he finds the path to the Forest Temple.
After Link defeats the Bokoblin in the middle of the area, a bird named Trill will call to him (time 20:33). This lovely bird--with a hairdo much like Coro's--runs a little shop selling Lantern Oil Refills for 20 Rupees and Red Potion Refills for 30 Rupees. After taking what he needs, Link must drop the required amount of Rupees into his box, or the bird will attack him.
A little to the north, Link finds a chest containing a Yellow Rupee, worth 10 Rupees (time 21:56).
A brief cutscene occurs as Link approaches the narrow pathway leading towards the temple (time 22:07). A pair of Bokoblins have captured Talo and the monkey and locked them in a tiny cage! Link to the rescue! Fortunately, the enemies are just a normal pair of Bokoblins.
After beating up the foes, Link destroys the cage with a spin attack (time 22:58). Talo and the monkey are free!
