#02: Founding the Foundry

Setting up the furnaces correctly is going to determine how easy it is to upgrade and expand them later on; I want to have enough throughput right out of the gate to put me way ahead for large scale production, but I'm still not sure exactly how many furnaces will ultimately be required for each material, so I figured I'd start with a setup of one array for each material (stone, iron, copper, and steel), 16 furnaces long (32 total, but starting with 8 on each for now). If I need more furnaces, I'd just add another array for that material, but I think this should be sufficient for quite a while.

I'm a careful planner, or at least I try to be, so I'm methodical in my configuration of the smelting area, trying to think ahead and plan out all the little extra spaces I'll need for routing belts, pipes, and powerlines while keeping the pathway clear for easy navigation around the base.

So I get the ouput lines where I need them, and begin construction on the main bus; this is a fairly common method of creating a system of parallel belts carrying the core materials, then I can make different branches off the bus for anything I need in an easily scalable way. We have been getting some biter attacks in the south, and there is a small base to the north and another to the west, so it's time to go for a stroll to take them out. Once my pollution cloud reaches their spawners, the evolution factor will increase as they absorb the pollution; my strategy is to take them out as soon as the cloud reaches them, or a bit before hand, so as to delay their evolution as much as possible while I amass weapons, munitions, and research the technologies required to defend myself against the larger biters that will inevitably descend upon me.

ABOUT THIS SERIES:
I'm a new player to Factorio, having recently picked it up with the Steam Release of the game. I have completed the campaigns and finished a single freeplay game by launching my first rocket, but beyond that I'm still green. In this series I hope to expand my skills and knowledge of the game as much as possible, exploring all the technologies, and pushing the limits of what I can do in it. Seeing as how Factorio is a pretty slow-paced game, the footage is sped up to 3x normal speed with post-commentary.

ABOUT THE GAME:
Factorio is an early access game that has recently released on Steam, but it has been in development for the past four years by the Wube Software team. This is a game about gathering resources to research technology, craft machines, process materials, and defend your base against angry biters, but this isn't just another survival/crafting game... no no! The name of the game is 'automation', and Factorio is all about finding ways to engineer solutions to your ever expanding horizons. We don't do manual labor here; instead we use our creative problem-solving skills to design a factory to do all the hard work for us.
