#04: Science, Steam, and Stoneworks

For Science! We must get the research facility up and running as soon as possible; I simply need to add the rest of the necessary labs, assembly machines, and power lines, then connect the input materials and off it goes! Then I can start on the multitude of tier 2 science, beginning with Energy Distribution 1 & Military 2. That will give me access to medium & large electric poles, and ammo piercing rounds, all of which take steel and copper plates to make; the better electric poles do a lot for convenience, especially when carrying power across long distances, and I need to start stockpiling ammo for later when I need to equip the perimeter defenses that are inevitably going to be needed, and I am barely using any copper/steel at the moment anyway, so it'll all be put to good use quickly.

Now we're using almost all 5 MW of our available power, which means it's probably time to setup another array of steam engines. I decide that since I'm going to move the power plant eventually, I might as well do it now; I like this spot on a northeastern peninsula which can hold 40+ steam engines once I clear the trees out. It's a bit of a run for the coal to take, but I'm just fine with that; with the power doubled, I should be good for a bit longer, at least enough to get through an oil refinery and a blue science setup.

One section of the factory that I'm going to do next is one I have named the "stoneworks" section; I've got stone bricks coming onto the main bus, along with a line of raw stone & iron ore. These can all be used up for their intended products right away in order to clear space for the oil refinery and the liquid bus. Stone bricks are taken off the belt for pathway usage, and also pumped into an assembly machine for walls, but I'm also going to use them for concrete later on as well as steel/electric furnaces. The iron ore is for the concrete as well, but the raw stone is mostly for rails; I found a decent setup to get all of these products built in a relatively small space, as well as some engines that I'll need for locomotives.

Now I'm ready for trains, and have the materials to build out my base and actually make a good perimeter defense. However, I do not have very much stone coming in at all, and I need to begin thinking about setting up a train outpost to have some delivered. Also, the very large patch of copper is going to be an issue; I very well might need to divert my base around that thing, which isn't very convenient, or perhaps mine it out and put the ore into a large storage array, but I don't know if the effort would be worth it.

ABOUT THIS SERIES:
I'm a new player to Factorio, having recently picked it up with the Steam Release of the game. I have completed the campaigns and finished a single freeplay game by launching my first rocket, but beyond that I'm still green. In this series I hope to expand my skills and knowledge of the game as much as possible, exploring all the technologies, and pushing the limits of what I can do in it. Seeing as how Factorio is a pretty slow-paced game, the footage is sped up to 3x normal speed with post-commentary.

ABOUT THE GAME:
Factorio is an early access game that has recently released on Steam, but it has been in development for the past four years by the Wube Software team. This is a game about gathering resources to research technology, craft machines, process materials, and defend your base against angry biters, but this isn't just another survival/crafting game... no no! The name of the game is 'automation', and Factorio is all about finding ways to engineer solutions to your ever expanding horizons. We don't do manual labor here; instead we use our creative problem-solving skills to design a factory to do all the hard work for us.
