#07: Power Plans
The steam engine setup is in need of a re-design, so I head off to shift things around and add more engines, capping out at 40 engines for a total of 20 MW of power availability. Petroleum refining also needs to be increased by adding more refineries and initiation light oil cracking for extra gas; once plastic production is steady, we should be okay to move on to the next task.
Fossil fuels aren't sustainable! We need solar intervention. I could have been making solar panels before now, but with batteries at our disposal we can also create accumulators alongside the panels, and with the right ratio of panels to accumulators (100:84) we can be entirely powered by the sun as the accumulators supply steady discharge to keep up throughout the night. However, my plan is to add solars to take the strain off the steam engines, but let the engines run our power at night; the steam engines will take precedence over accumulator usage anyway, so without disconnecting them from the power grid, I can't actually use them as a backup source of power without a some sort of a triggering system, but that's fine with me.
With solar panels and accumulators being stockpiled, I can make a few upgrades around the base: namely, the furnace arrays could use updating with steel furnaces. I also need to focus on taking out some of the nearby biter bases to fend off their ever-increasing attacks on my operation. Military 3 is here, and with it we have access to the combat shotgun and poison capsules, both of which are powerful weapons.

ABOUT THIS SERIES:
I'm a new player to Factorio, having recently picked it up with the Steam Release of the game. I have completed the campaigns and finished a single freeplay game by launching my first rocket, but beyond that I'm still green. In this series I hope to expand my skills and knowledge of the game as much as possible, exploring all the technologies, and pushing the limits of what I can do in it. Seeing as how Factorio is a pretty slow-paced game, the footage is sped up to 3x normal speed with post-commentary.
ABOUT THE GAME:
Factorio is an early access game that has recently released on Steam, but it has been in development for the past four years by the Wube Software team. This is a game about gathering resources to research technology, craft machines, process materials, and defend your base against angry biters, but this isn't just another survival/crafting game... no no! The name of the game is 'automation', and Factorio is all about finding ways to engineer solutions to your ever expanding horizons. We don't do manual labor here; instead we use our creative problem-solving skills to design a factory to do all the hard work for us.
