#07: Turning On the Production
I've done a lot of work getting circuits and the supply production lines, and it's time to get them up and running... it's alive! And now it's time to decommission the supply factories at the bridge; this one I've added on a weapons branch for producing explosives and drones... I'll need them in the biter wars ahead, so I know it's a good idea to get a stockpile going quickly. Using active provider chests, I am able to disconnect all the old machinery from the input lines, and migrate all of the old supplies into storage at the new base; the flying swarm is the herald of the great exodus. The main base is now online and all operations have been recentralized here, except for research which will remain at The Bridge until it is complete.
I have come up with a better way of setting up my supply factories: instead of each item type getting deposited into a passive provider with an item limit, I instead use a storage chest and have a smart inserter with a logistical item limit for that item type; this way I can have the bots remove excess supplies from my inventory and they will be stored with the rest of them, given that there aren't any others in the system elsewhere. This is very useful for transport belts especially, since the older belts I replace can be "trashed" and they're taken directly to where they will be used to upgrade to faster belts.
With the base up and running, I can easily see the faults and address problems with tweaks and upgrades; I'm seeing rocket launch soon in the future, as our base is almost complete.

ABOUT THIS SERIES:
My goal is to launch as many rockets as possible before the next big patch release (alpha 13) which is "scheduled" sometime mid summer. I say that because the Wube team is more likely to post-pone it if they think it needs more work, but they have said that they're going for June. As of beginning this series, I still have only launched a rocket one time, and I haven't gone large-scale... yet.
ABOUT THE GAME:
Factorio is an early access game that has recently released on Steam, but it has been in development for the past four years by the Wube Software team. This is a game about gathering resources to research technology, craft machines, process materials, and defend your base against angry biters, but this isn't just another survival/crafting game... no no! The name of the game is 'automation', and Factorio is all about finding ways to engineer solutions to your ever expanding horizons. We don't do manual labor here; instead we use our creative problem-solving skills to design a factory to do all the hard work for us.
