#02: Gathering of Sciences

The first step to greatness in Factorio is getting a research facility up and running, and that means establishing some oil processing, but first there is an issue of constant attacks that I would like to address, so I'm first off to take out those bases to the east, and any more that may be in range of my unhindered pollution cloud. The desert is an unforgiving starting area.

I've said before that biter bases "absorbing pollution" will increase the evolution factor, but this was incorrect! I don't know how I came to think that, but it's a misconception. There are 3 events that cause evolution to increase: the passage of time, global pollution production, and destroying biter spawners. So really the only thing I was doing by "going on the offensive" was increasing my evolution rate a bit faster than if I had just setup some defensive outposts to hold them off for a while.

I manage to fit everything I need in my little bridge area! Oil, robots, the works. Well, at least on a small scale to provide me with everything I need to get a foothold and make plans for a larger base. I'm actually surprised at how well my setup is doing in research; this blue science setup of is enough to get me through ALL of the research! At first, there is a bit of a rough patch trying to get enough petroleum throughput to get acid and plastic being made sufficiently, but after adding more refineries, I hit a sweet spot and am able to tip the science over to immediately get advanced oil processing; that gives me access to cracking, and the blue science packs just start rolling in after that. In fact, I begin to get bottlenecked more because of my iron deficiency than anything.

From here, I set my sights on some major solar intervention. Going green is a priority, so I'll need to setup some accumulator and solar panel assemblers for... unlimited power.

ABOUT THIS SERIES:
My goal is to launch as many rockets as possible before the next big patch release (alpha 13) which is "scheduled" sometime mid summer. I say that because the Wube team is more likely to post-pone it if they think it needs more work, but they have said that they're going for June. As of beginning this series, I still have only launched a rocket one time, and I haven't gone large-scale... yet.

Factorio is an early access game that has recently released on Steam, but it has been in development for the past four years by the Wube Software team. This is a game about gathering resources to research technology, craft machines, process materials, and defend your base against angry biters, but this isn't just another survival/crafting game... no no! The name of the game is 'automation', and Factorio is all about finding ways to engineer solutions to your ever expanding horizons. We don't do manual labor here; instead we use our creative problem-solving skills to design a factory to do all the hard work for us.
