#1104 Mortal Kombat Deception (PS2) Unplayable Characters (6/16): Kung Lao playthrough.
A playthrough of the unplayable character Kung Lao in the PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deception.
Deadly Alliance and Deception tend to feel like two halves of the same game (a little like the original Golden Sun duology), and that’s extremely apparent with the fact that one game has Kung Lao, and the other has Liu Kang. It’s also apparent when one game has Kitana, and the other has Jade and Mileena. Luckily, the two were reunited in the sublime Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, which told an in-depth and expanded story of Mortal Kombat II, and was released pretty soon after this.
The interesting thing about Kung Lao is that both of his movesets were given to Shujinko, which explains his absence. He’s also missing his hat, which is just weird. He doesn’t have his special moves (because, you know, he doesn’t have his hat), but that doesn’t matter because most of his fighting styles are really good, hence why they ended up being given to the main character of Konquest Mode.
I thought Kung Lao was alright here; he has that nice mix of combo-potential and knock-back that you want from most characters. I couldn’t help but miss Shujinko’s special moves though, especially his Ice Blast attack. Just makes things go a whole lot more swimmingly. On the whole however, Kung Lao here is basically just Shujinko, so you really don’t miss much by not playing as him.
Next up, it’s the second and final video on a certain ninja-princess.
