#1112 Mortal Kombat Deception (PS2) Unplayable Characters (14/16): Young Shujinko playthrough.
A playthrough of the unplayable character Young Shujinko/Boy Shujinko in the PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deception.
A few days ago, I reached 3400 subscribers! Thanks as always to everyone who's still continuing to follow this channels, particularly as this series recently passed five years and counting. Crazy.
Now we’ve really gotten into the NPC stage of these vids. No longer beta characters and leftover data, the last couple characters to cover are all exclusive, yet negligible characters only seen in the Konquest Mode of the game. Nowhere is that more apparent than the young version of Shujinko, who is only playable in the earlier parts of Konquest Mode. Back when I first played this game, I was actually quite annoyed by just how old Shujinko got as the game mode went on. The old, wise master archetype works pretty well, but it was almost a bit disheartening to see his entire life go by in such a short space of time. I can’t remember many other times a video game gave me a slight existential crisis.
Regular Shujinko can only use his special moves by finding them in Konquest Mode. This means that Boy Shujinko is basically just a representation of what it’s like to play as Shujinko when you’re not signed into a profile, and not being signed into a profile means you aren’t able to use the moves Shujinko has selected in Konquest Mode. It’s unique, albeit a bit obnoxious.
Shujinko himself actually uses Kung Lao’s movesets, which is probably the main reason for him not returning (legitimately) in this game. Shujinko even gets the option to perform a fatality, but of course doesn’t have any, like most of the unplayables. Young Shujinko seems to function perfectly fine, and in all honesty, I’m really surprised that they didn’t bother to make this regular Shujinko’s alternate outfit, as they did with Liu Kang getting his regular, human self as a hidden costume. Would have been much better, and I can't help but wonder if maybe this version of him was originally going to be the main playable version, and then they decided to change him to a wise master later down the line. Food for thought, certainly. Speaking of Liu Kang, we get to see a bizarre little variant on him up next.
