#139 DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 3: DIXIE'S DOUBLE TROUBLE - FULL PLAYTHROUGH (61%) - Beating My Snes Games
Here is my Full playthrough of Donkey Kong 3 done, as always using original hardware on a Super Nintendo with no cheats or save states! To save on time, many of my deaths have been removed from the edit, extra lives are very easy to grind in certain levels.
Follow me on instagram @Cabin_game_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.
REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-Sometimes more of same, no matter how tasty, just isnt enough to quench the appitite!
A bad game? Not at all, with two blockbusters in its wake it would be quite the shock to see Rare deliver anything but excellence, however its relationship to greatness, is also its undoing. DKC3, while delivering everything you've come to expect from the franchise thus far in creative mechanics, fun gameplay and delightful artwork & character design, fails to create that unique edge vital to what catapulted the first two installments into the forefront of everyone's attention.
Another character swap replaces Diddy with Kiddy, who plays like a more rounded Donkey Kong at the expense of feeling a little bland. More changes to the rollcall of Kremlins such as Barrels, shields & springs, feel bizzare if not a little desperate at times, what's wrong with adding a simple bit of enemy fodder to bounce off every so often? Improvements to Boss battles are certainly commendable however.
Additions to gameplay through a more interactive map, trading missions, more collectables etc all play a part, but for me at least, the desire to go 100% simply wasnt there apon completion this time. A stark difference to DKC2 where the need for 100% felt almost demanded!
It's of course true that DKC3's late system release played a part in its lack of success, but with such a handicap not applicable today, the usual helping of a late system release demonstrating the most impressive aspects of the systems hardware and earning the coveted 'hidden gem' badge of honor, simply isnt the case here. Perhaps Rare just peaked too soon with DKC but the same engine that first looked so incredibly groundbreaking, whilst still highly impressive, by game 3, the magic is somewhat normalised.
Where DKC2 vastly expanded the DK experience, DKC3 only seems add that overpriced side extension. Sure it adds a bit more room upstairs but was it really worth the money?
