-Well it's scantily clad Japanese schoolgirl time once again and before passing any judgement my way, first know this was actually a very successful PG-13 style TV series by Manga studios before becoming a mildly successful series of games. Whilst the smut minded among you might imagine something morally questionable given the inclusion of 'R' in the title, shame on you, for the R actually stands for 'Return', this being the series 2nd season.
It also happens to be the 2nd game in the series too, which for the most part only saw release in Japan. The original game did see a western release even making it to the PAL region, tho only localised in French, however given the gameplay is much the same and 'R' considered the maginally better, I opted simply for this SFC exclusive. Hindsight hasn't changed my mind either.
Once you're past the questionable attire and obvious attempt at titillation, what's left is sadly little more than another mediocre beat em up. It's fair to say the large character sprite work is attractive overall but the game has a sluggish pace, little original in its fight mechanics and a certain cheapness that's hard to forgive.
In fairness the fighting isn't awful, the combo is satisfying enough to unleash and the throw move behaves as you'd expect. I like the addition of the fireball too. There's even the cliche health draining special move which instantly renders it all but utterly useless. The problem stems from the difficulty.
For the most part Sailor Moon behaves as you expect, however certain enemies; namely the rolly polly guys and those insufferable twirling sword carriers (basically anything that spins), are insufferably annoying. You can't duck, meaning the ground rollers are impossible to hit apart from landing a hopelessly weak jump attack. Find yourself surrounded & just watch your health disappear.
Bosses are a mostly a simple endeavour especially with aid of your special, so I guess things balance out.
Worth the play? Well it's affordable but there's better out there for a similar price!
