Here is my Full playthrough of Rock N Roll Racing done, as always, using original hardware on a Super Nintendo with no cheats or save states!
Follow me on instagram @CabinSNES_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.
REVIEW (Originally posted on Instagram):
-Well, here goes again! Not just in writing this review thanks to IGs deleting my first attempt, but also through yet another classic that nestles itself firmly in the 'both camps' argument regarding what is its superior console port!
Sound design is really where the nerd rage gauge begins to redline! The Megadrive imo, with its notoriously 'Grungier' sound chip is perfectly matched for what can only be described as little less than a 16-bit audio masterpiece!
It might be common place to hear star studded soundtracks for games nowadays, but to hear Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Steppinwolf among plenty of other Metal classics, reproduced on the Snes... Well it was unheard of! Okay so there's no vocals but come on, for 16-bit, this is one of a kind territory!
While the Megadrive's darker vibe truly pays homage to these classics, it's also fair to say that the Snes does a very passable job too and if you can look beyond these differences, the gameplay & visual side of things is equally great on either console.
And they truly are great! Rock N Roll Racing feels like a really refinded version of Activision's Galaxy 5000 on the NES. I wouldnt be surprised to learn that the same people weren't involved with both games? Gameplay sees you race across a multitude of progressively more challenging alien worlds. The goal of winning races to earn money to modify your vehicle to win more races to earn more money to eventually upgrade your vehicles & repeat, may seem one-dimensional but it's incredibly fun and rewarding. The addition of rockets, mines and turbo boosts breaths layers into the racing that demands more strategy than first thought.
There's no escaping that this is a pretty tough racer, especially in the latter worlds where obnoxiousness knows no bounds. Oil Spills, Crossroads, Pits, Snow all appear in the most hair pulling of places and you'd have to be Gandi to remain expletive free throughout. However gameplay is tamed with practice & the password given for each division keeps the suffering in check! Hard mode unlocks more, but starting settings are Easy, so some credit please for beating Veteran Mode!
