#19 UN SQUADRON - FULL PLAYTHROUGH (NORMAL MODE) - Beating My Snes Games
Here is my full playthrough UN Squadron on Snes done live on IGTV. I've edited out some of my deaths and much of the many supply truck grinding for money runs.
Follow me on instagram @CabinSNES_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts and no cheats.
REVIEW:
-While its clear Sega offered gamers a far richer library of 16-bit shumps than Nintendo, its naive to assume there aren't some standout offerings on the Snes too. I'd go as far as say my favourite 16-bit shumps are infact on Nintendo hardware and while UN Squadron doesnt quite qualify for a podium finish, its certainly rubs shoulders with the best the system has too offer.
It's always reassuring to see Capcom at the helm despite this not being their go to genre, the partnership with Tiertex pays off here commendably, even if the duo's idea of how the UN handles conflict is, well rather more fantasy than reality!
Rather than dropping into Bosnia or the like, to act as peacekeepers, your goal is instead to pilot a fighter jet & destroy an entire invasion force single handedly.
You can pick whatever level you wish to begin on, which in principle is a neat idea since it allows you the grind the harder levels for practice, but in reality its pointless since until you've leveled up sufficiently in the early levels, your chances at survivng in the latter is best counted in seconds!
At the beginning of a stage you've given the choice to upgrade ships and re-arm. Supposedly working
for you, it begs the question why is this gangly old goat makes you pay so handsomely for upgrades to protect; presumably his own workshop from being annihilated by enemy forces? Its expensive to upgrade ships, demanding some uncharacteristically dull grinding for money via the infinite supply truck attack runs. It's slow and rather tedious but unavoidable since only certain weapons work with certain ships & you need that final ship! Learning what is necessary for which levels and bosses really is vital to survival!
Bosses are pretty unforgiving until you've put in the practice but each is unique and considerably fun given time. As with all great shumps utilising the right sub weapons at the right times levels the playfield. Well most of the time!
The gameplay is undeniably hard enough to render the challenge considerable given your life count but with practice it does get far more reasonable. Thankfully it's rarely anything but highly enjoyable!
