REVIEW:
-Being a console kid growing up, playing the wealth of gaming excellence produced for the home computer scene was reserved purely for other peoples houses (mainly my cousin's Amiga500), otherwise I just had to live in hope of the best games being ported to console. Often they were, sadly often not always in the best shape. Poor ports of many home computer classics led to many unfair reviews from console gamers none the wiser.
When speaking of Amiga classics, it's hard to ignore Another World. Following in the footsteps of Prince of Persia, the blend of puzzle, platform and adventure was not completely new & tho still in its relative infancy Another World did plenty for laying the bricks & mortar for the genres future through its clever use of storytelling through cinematics. Being so successful, ports to consoles were in abundance. While the CD based systems like the 3DO and MegaCD offer the best experience, due to popularity it's the cartridge ports on Megadrive and Snes that are the most fondly remembered. Leaving nostalgia at the door, while its impressive to see the game on a Snes cartridge, the sacrifice in slowdown renders it almost unplayable!
On the occasional screen where Lester is the only moving thing, you're treated to a rare glimpse of the games native speed. With each new animation the gameplay suffers dramatically, highlighted no less infuriatingly during gun battles where each additional enemy handicaps the guns behaviour even further, often resulting in my cheap deaths.
There's an incredible demand on trial and error and some complex puzzle solving but the reward is high for progression, even if each inch of progress is met with even harder puzzles to ponder.
It's a crying shame the slowdown hampers the experience so drastically because beneath the sludgey controls is an excellent game that any fan of classic puzzle adventures needs to play at least once.
This wasnt my first attempt at the game which sped up my progress, tho it was my first time beating it. An early masterpiece to be enjoyed still today, however do yourself a favour and avoid the SNES port!!
