REVIEW:
-It's hard to truly articulate how much I adore this game. Much like a certain Rolling Rock gustling nerd, Castlevania has always been one of my favourite series and despite a rich history and admiration for the NES trilogy and later entries that followed on superior hardware, it's this 4th entry that will forever be where my heart resides.
Though later 2D entries did appear; mostly on handheld consoles, to me 4 feels like the natural crossroads moment for when the series branched off into new directions, posing as a fond farewell to the classic format.
With comfort coming through a strong familiarity to the NES trilogy; style, control and gameplay are immediately identifiable, however everything also has a refreshingly improved feel to it. Besides the obviously audio visual step forward, the inclusion of an 8-way directional whipping option, levels much of the unfair aspects of previous games while proving considerably more satisfying to attack with. The variety offered through level design is stunning, with a healthy dose of unique SNES hardware manipulations that really help to paint the richest atmosphere to a Castlevania game yet. They even fixed the stairs!!! Well nearly, you still can't jump on them but at least you dont fall to your death everytime you try and walk down a set!
It wouldn't be right to not mention the music too! Easily one of my favourite scores on the SNES. Classic after classic, summed up no less by the intro and final stages. However for me stage 2 (the woods) is what I enjoy the most.
Aside from Simon's Quest, I'd probably say this is the easiest entry of the earlier titles. While still challenge enough for many, the usual inclusion of infinite continues leaves this one very beatable for those with the patience to see it through.
Finally For those reading already frothing at the mouth at no mention of Dracula X (aka Rondo of Blood/Vampire Kiss), of course im aware of what an excellent entry it was, however given its rarity, combined with its subpar port to the SNES, I opted to purchase the original...
