REVIEW:
-Wow! Here's one that actually does live up to its reputation for being one seriously tough cookie to beat!
With my introduction to the series coming via R-Type III; a game I still regard today as one of the finest shooters ever made. It therefore may come as a surprise to learn I'd not bothered much with its predecessor, largely because it's widely criticised for slowdown, a handicap the sequel (also on SNES) thankfully corrected. There's definitely no ignoring the effect the slowdown has on gameplay. Running at full speed, this is a very fast shooter. Potentially, playing this at the PAL 50hz speed may result in less slowdown, however since I run all my Snes hardware at the native NTSC 60hz; when utilising rapid fire, especially when equipped with the spread laser, the slowdown is a constant!
While it's sometimes suggested the slowdown is an unintended advantage; offering more thinking time, the payoff is considerable considering that when the gameplay reverts to its native speed at very unpredictable moments, the result is sudden surprise boosts in game speed. The challenge is already hard enough without the game randomly dialing in radical speed changes like some sadistic 2nd player!
Slowdown aside, this is far from an easy shooter. The level of complexity programmed into the AI is actually jaw dropping. Levels have been painstakingly designed to truly punish your endurance. Enemy designs are infuriatingly devious, from those than home in on you, those that mirror your movement to those sneaky shits that let off a subtle little pop shot just as their moving past your ship and out of the danger zone! Ahhh the pain is relentless!
While you're granted infinite lives, with no checkpoints, a death, even at the boss, means replaying the entire stage! Bosses are far from pushovers for beginners and it shouldn't be understated how hard it can be getting back there!
Tho hardly an 'introductory' shump, far easier Novice & Easy modes are available, however I'm pleased I persevered with Normal mode. I can't imagine I'll be rushing back to challenge 'Hard' anytime soon tho.
