4K Nintendo 64 FPGA Analogue System Delayed Until Summer 2025
A lot of people are fans of the Analogue line of FPGA clone systems. These systems perfectly replicate the performance of original hardware thanks to the FPGA, or Field-Programmable Gate Array. This is essentially a type of integrated circuit that can be reconfigured to emulate other hardware. In the past they have created systems replicating NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx 16, and even handheld systems. In 2024, they announced perhaps their most ambitious project in the Analogue 3D. The goal was to finally bring a clone N64 system to market, something that many others have tried to do and failed. The Analogue 3D was due to ship at the end of March 2025, but mid-month they announced that the system would be delayed. Now, not coming out until July 2025.
The Analogue 3D recreates the original Nintendo 64 hardware at a transistor level. This aims to provide unparalleled accuracy and compatibility with N64 games. The console offers 4K HDMI output, significantly enhancing the visual fidelity of N64 games. It also has features that recreate the look of original CRT displays. A core focus is on 100% compatibility with the entire library of original N64 game cartridges. The Analogue 3D also adds in and incorporates modern features such as Dual-band Wi-Fi for updates, Bluetooth LE for wireless controller support, Four original-style controller ports for authentic gameplay, USB-A ports and an SD card slot.
In essence, the Analogue 3D is a premium retro console that aims to provide the most accurate and high-quality way to experience Nintendo 64 games on modern displays. The overall quality of the hardware, which has a premium feel to it, is a huge reason why Analogue has been successful over the years. Their past systems have always delivered a wonderful experience, which is why the N64-compatible Analogue 3D was such an exciting and desired announcement.
Perhaps the biggest reason why I didn't preorder one was the fact that I have RGB Modded and upgraded original N64 systems and RetroTink 4K and RetroTink 5X upscalers. Those can be used with many additional systems, which makes it more versatile, but this setup is also more expensive. What do you think? Is this something you're looking into? Let me know in the comments.
