Playing PlayStation Games in 4K On Original Hardware (Ok, PS2, But Close Enough)
With so many people now getting 4K televisions, the desire to play retro games upscaled to 4K is greater than ever before. While some systems are out there that allow you to do this, such as the recently delayed Analogue 3D, we're still looking for a decent way to play original PlayStation games in this upscaled resolution. Or are we? You can actually do so using component video cables from HD Retrovision, an adapter, and the RetroTink 4k or RetroTink 4k CE. let's see how original PlayStation games look, although I will admit I am playing on a PlayStation 2 Slim.
For starters, to get everything hooked up you're going to need component video cables. I turned to HD RetroVision component cables for the Sega Genesis 2. Wait, you might be thinking, that's a completely different connector! And you would be right. The thing is there is a model 2 Genesis to PlayStation adapter for about $10 available through Castlemania Games. From here I went into my RetroTink 4k and got to playing.
Now one thing of note is the fact that Mike Chi, the inventor of the RetroTink, has a number of preloaded profiles for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in the 4K. My issue is that my capture device does not necessarily read all of those formats. As such I am using the default 4K profile.
Firing up Crash Bandicoot I thought the game overall looked neat and clean, with very sharp graphics throughout the levels. One thing I did notice is that things looked a little bit dark, and I believe that's due to a switch position on the HD retrovision component video cables. there's an inline attenuator that you can toggle one way or the other which will make the picture brighter or darker. I need to go ahead and flip the switch and the other direction to make it a little bit brighter.
Next, I fired up Blaster Master, a game that's not as well remembered or finally thought of as the originals on the NES. I again thought the game looked decent overall, and had a good responsiveness to it. That's one of the beautiful things about this setup is that lag, latency, and delay are all kept to a minimum.
I love the fact that we now have two different options to go and upscale two 4K from RetroTink with the 4K and the 4K CE. Are you a big fan of the original PlayStation? would you like to be able to play your PlayStation games in 4K? Share your thoughts in the comments.
