Wait?! JAPANESE & AMERICAN Super Mario Games Are NOT THE SAME?!?
I love collecting import video games, especially Japanese Famicom games. I've had a fascination with Japanese items for a long time, from games to RC cars and trucks, to models. When I got my Retron5 10 years ago one of the things I wanted was to get my hands on certain Famicom games. I've been able to do so over the years, and one thing that I don't know how many people know is that the US and Japanese versions of Mario games are different, and I'm not just talking about Super Mario Bros 2 being a different game in Japan! Let's take a look because Japanese and American Super Mario Games are NOT the same!
Super Mario Bros AND Super Mario Bros 3
One of the biggest differences in the original Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 3 is the level up and down mechanics. See, in the USA when you get fully powered up with say the Mushroom and then the Fire Flower and then take a hit you lose the Fire Flower but you're still Super. In Japan, this is not the case. Regardless of how powered up you are, you go from Super Mario, Fire Flower Mario, Racoon Mario or any other power-ups to mini-Mario. This definitely punishes players of the Japanese title if and when they take a hit or make a mistake.
Super Mario Bros 2 And Doki Doki Panic
Let's look past the fact that SMB2 has Mario characters and Doki Doki Panic has characters from Fuji TV, that's a given, but there are crucial gameplay differences. First, to properly beat the game you need to beat it with all 4 characters! That's crazy! But to help you along the way, since Doki Doki Panic is a Famicom Disk System Game, you can save your progress as you go versus having to beat it in one sitting, which is a lot better.
The final difference between Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario 2 is the fact that your characters cannot run in Doki Doki Panic! It is such a simple control change but it makes it much harder than Super Mario Bros 2! There are some levels that, to this day, I cannot get past in Doki Doki Panic Because of it.
