A 4K N64 Solution? Here's How I Have One And It's Amazing!
I know one of the reasons why people are looking forward to the upcoming Analogue 3D N64 clone console is the fact that it does output 4K video quality. It was disappointing for some when they recently delayed it, however, it doesn't bother me a ton because I have ways that I can get 4K out of original hardware. How? With Retro-Bit S-Video cables and the RetroTink 4K or RetroTink 4K CE. Let's take a closer look at how I was able to setup my 4K N64 Solution and how it's amazing!
From the box, the N64 does NOT output RGB. As such, the best video quality you can get from a stock N64 is S-Video. That is what we're going to test here with the Retro-bit S-Video Cables you purchase. If your system has a serial number that begins with NS-1, you can also install one of Voultar's N64 RGB Mod kits, shown in this video here: • Improve the Video from the Nintendo 6...
The N64 has such a great library of games, but they just don't look great on a stock N64 using composite. S-Video helps to deliver the a good overall image quality. Add the RetroTink 4K into the mix now, and you get the some of the best image quality ever available without needing an HDMI mod, at least in my opinion.
I love the fact that Mike Chi from RetroTink makes getting a great image foolproof! Once the cables were connected, output set to 4K and it was time to play. From the word go, I didn't experience any lag, delay, or latency through this setup, even when opting for Retro Fighters Wireless Brawler 64 controllers.
If you are going to test out the Nintendo 64, of course you need to test out Mario 64. I have played so much of this game, and I know it inside and out. While the RetroTin5x did a good job with the N64 in Mario 64 in particular, the 4K takes it to the next level. I'm not a huge scanline fan, but even the scan lines did not look bad on this title.
This is an amazing way to play your Nintendo 64 games with original hardware, but it's not exactly inexpensive. The RetroTink 4K CE is several hundred dollars more than the Analogue 3D, but the benefit is that you can use it with more systems than just one. But you can also use it with multiple systems vs just one.
