A playthrough of the sub-boss Ogre in the arcade version of Namco's Tekken 3.

Ogre has two forms in this game, as Kazuya did in the previous game. Ogres are like onions you see; they have layers.

In his regular form he has the stereotypical green skin of an ogre, though dresses in very Aztecan garb and fights in a very Aztecan stage.

Ogre a shit, that's all I have to say. Difficult to like the character that presumably killed best girl (Jun). As mentioned before, his style is a combination of Jun's and Kazuya's, including Kazuya's 112 punch and his iconic using of Jun's backflip and uppercut (ub+3, 2). However, he also has a number of unique moves of his own, including his backbreaker throw (which to this day makes me grimace) and and his two hit grab (f,f+2) which is unblockable on the second hit. Ogre's range is pitiful compared to his second form, but in contrast he doesn't suffer from such an insane hitbox and tends to be better at avoiding damage. His other iconic moves include a series of air kicks (including a variant on Heihachi's own double air kick), as well as a series of low-hitting kicks which can be infinite, or can end in a launching kick attack. I never ended up showing this because, well, Tekken just has too many moves to end up showing this stuff off quite frankly. I'll at the very least try to show this stuff off in Tekken Tag.

Speaking more about the game itself for a second, Tekken 3 has a much more cohesive mood than its predecessor. While T2 was varied in terms of tone and mood, T3 has a sort of suave edge to it, with stand-out themes in particular including Nina's, Law's, Jin's, and many others. There are few games which encapsulate the 90s more than Tekken 3, and it's a bit of a time capsule in that way. In the arcade version, the game now (sort of?) has 3D backgrounds, but you'll only notice them more when we get to the PS1 port of the game. Backgrounds are still infinite loops; something which we'll see change in a couple of games time. There's just a weirdly badass feeling to the whole mood of this game, and it's not wonder it drew so many people into it, and became the defining game of the series.

Ogre himself...well, I just never liked him too much. He honestly feels more like a permanent sub-boss to me, rather than someone I'd see as anything approaching a final boss. I think the two-round, two different bosses structure is awesome (and I'm glad we'll get to see it again in Tag 2 and Tekken 7, not to mention other games like Mortal Kombat X), but on the whole I just found him underwhelming as a boss. That said, he is regardless very fun to play as, with a whole assortment of fantastic moves at his disposal. He's formidable at the very least, that must be said.

Ogre will return in: Tekken Tag Tournament. Up next, the last boss of Tekken 3 to cover. See you then.
