#681 Tekken 3 (ARC) Bosses (3/3): Heihachi playthrough.
A playthrough of the sub-sub-boss Heihachi in the arcade version of Namco's Tekken 3.
Heihachi finally returns as a boss, after nearly two months of Tekken uploads (wew lad). Not the last time we'll see him as a boss again otherwise, as there's still two more vids to do on the guy.
Heihachi's become a lot more refined here. Although mostly a Mishima clone with some of Paul's moves before, he's now gained a number of additional moves (or, at least, has since we saw him in Tekken 1). One of the most useful is his launching punch (f, f+2) which deals good damage while launching the opponent into the air for juggling. He also has this fantastic air double-kick (uf+3,4), which Ogre gets an even better variation of (uf+3,4,3). While he has the usual basic Mishima combos (1,1,2 and 1,2,2), he also gets a brand new move which works in both of these combos and on its own (1+2) where he launches his hands in front of him like he was trying to fire a hadoken or something. This move is particularly good as, not only does it knock the opponent far away when it hits, but it's also much easier to land in an air juggle, if a little more tricky to consistently unleash. He has the classic Mishima double roundhouse (uf+4,4), and his usual hammer and punch (d+1,2) and lunging punch (qcf+2) moves as well. On the whole, he has a fantastic variation here, and as my first Tekken game he was definitely one of the characters which stood out the most to me. As a sub-sub-boss, I think he does his job very well on the whole, although the way Ogre absorbs his power to become True Ogre seems like something out of a cheesy Marvel plotline (i.e. Monster Ock in Spider-Man). On the whole though, he's a really great character here, and will only continue to get better with later instalments of the franchise. Finally, as this is a soft reboot (and 20 years after Tekken 2), Heihachi is now quite a bit older than he was before, and is definitely the most apparent character to age (unlike Anna and Nina who are, apparently, immortal as they don't seem to have aged a day in 20 years).
Another interesting thing about this game it is showing how the arcade hardware (and subsequently the PS1 itself) was starting to get pushed to the max, as is evident with True Ogre having to fight in darkened areas in order to function. We'll see something similar to this in the arcade version of Tekken Tag.
That wraps it up for the bosses. The sub-bosses concept was dropped in this game and as a result all hidden characters (all five of them, wew) will regularly appear in arcade mode, a feature which also carries over to the PS1 port.
Next time, we take a look at a brand new character to the franchise. See you then.
