Jumping Flash! is another one of those games I always regretted not picking up and playing back at the time. Honestly, for how much I loathe Sony, it's strange how many of those games actually came out on the original PlayStation. But, I guess as far as I'm concerned, that was the only time Sony was any good. From my perspective, that was the only period in time when Sony was actively trying to make video games -- or at least, the kind of video games I enjoyed. From the sixth generation onward, they seemed to be more focused on "evolving the medium", whether by essentially shaping the entire mainstream gaming landscape in the days of the PS2 or their current obsession with transforming video games into cinematic "objets d'art". Both goals just leave me feeling disgusted: I just wanna jump on stuff as a robotic rabbit named Robbit, dangit!

While I typically claim to be a "fourth-generation supremacist" when it comes to my retro intake, the truth of the matter is that the fifth generation probably had as strong of an impact on my overall taste in games as its direct predecessor. Low-poly 3D games with an aesthetic that leans into their graphical limitations are essentially the video gaming equivalent of comfort food for me. And Jumping Flash! delivers that charm in spades.

It delivers equally as much in terms of gameplay. Despite coming out in 1995, well before Super Mario 64 "invented" the very concept of the 3D platformer, Robbit was already quite capable of traversing the third dimension... and it didn't need an analog stick to do it well. Even more surprising, the game utilized a first-person perspective! That's pretty incredible.

I decided to do a couple of the game's worlds in "Extra Mode", the game's harder difficulty... but honestly, I think I got everything I wanted out of the initial playthrough, which I finished in one shot, as expected. But don't think the stream's over yet: I'll be playing the sequel next time!
