Addition & Subtraction Racing (2006) - Every PC F1 Game
Addition & Subtraction Racing by PowerVision Multimedia/Eureka Multimedia, 2006.
I think this is the first video of this game on YouTube! It's a rare Australian edutainment title, where you drive around an open world answering maths questions! It's sometimes called Addition & Subtraction Racing Adventure (even on Eureka Multimedia's own advertising!).
The game has 4 locations (none of them real-world, so the titles below are what I was aiming for) and 4 vehicles - ute, buggy, Ferrari 360-alike and this Ferrari F1 car sort of thing!
Handling is generally dreadful, but adds to the gameplay, by making it difficult to get to the answer in time! For each question you answer you gain money, once you've filled up an image of a key, a key will appear on the stage, which unlocks the next location.
Power-up wise, you need fuel to race, you have limited repairs, turbo boost to get out of tight spots and gold, which just converts to cash, really.
There are two modes in game, the initial Adventure Mode, with the maths questions, you can drive anywhere, and the Race Mode, which is a one-on-one race against a ghost car for 1 lap.
This game is quite buggy, it's hard to get working reliably on a modern PC, and you can see the speedometer is all black; it starts green and white until a few races in, when it goes black!
1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 This is the Race Mode in action, with a ghost car (that I let get away first, so it doesn't overlap me). You can see how tricky the handling is here, and as the camera pulls back so far, it makes steering even harder! There is an "in car" view, but it's bumper cam, so I didn't use it (as you can't see any part of the F1 car). This is the mountain location.
2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:19 It wouldn't be an Australian game without an Outback location (curiously with an active volcano!). This clip shows how the Adventure Mode maths questions work; you get $1000 for answering correctly first time, less if it takes more than one go to get the right answer. If you're not fast enough the answers will fly away and reappear elsewhere! There's also a jump button, to catch items in the sky (as well as a "lift" feature to, erm, float like a balloon!).
3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:45 This is the city track. It has a long tunnel section and a waterside airport, which I've shown here. The car handling is odd, you brake and it suddenly reacts late, hence me slowing to a stop in a few places. I use the turbo boost at the end!
4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 1:11 Back to the mountain location for this one, and a slightly Eau Rouge shaped part.
5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:28 There are sort-of pitstop areas, but they don't do anything. You can't really damage your car, as the Repair power up kicks in (unless you've run out of Repairs, when the race will end).
6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 1:38 This is the final location in-game, a cave, which is full of lava! As your opponent is a ghost car, you can't crash into them. But (and this is a fantastic bug), if you flip the car, the whole game crashes to the desktop! A literal crash!
