ToCA Race Driver 3 by Codemasters, 2006.

This game still probably has the most varied vehicles and championships of any title, ever. No other game allows you to race F1, IndyCar, Rally, classics, off-road and everything in-between (even lawnmowers!).

One of the new additions to the game was in F1 cars; the game covers several eras, including cars from the 1950s, 60s, 80s, 90s and this here, the Williams FW27 from 2005.

I know the game can be run in widescreen, but doing so crops out some of the in-car cockpit view, so I've left it at 4:3 aspect ratio.

1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 Monza isn't in the game, so I've used Hockenheim. The in-car cockpit of the F1 cars is generally dreadful, and the wing mirrors don't work! The tyres seem very heavy and fat, though that might be down to the camera field-of-vision, chosen for speed. The computer controlled cars don't have the maximum AI value here, so are a bit slow in places.

2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:29 It is possible to race at Silverstone, in the rain, in this game. However, the track still seems to reflect the (hidden) sun, spray and rain effects are just "good enough" and the car shadows seem to have disappeared. It doesn't look that great, compared to the dry weather tracks!

3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:42 Monaco isn't in the game, so I'm using Surfers Paradise (as I did with ToCA Race Driver 2). Very pretty graphics here, blue, blue skies!

4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 0:58 Spa is in the game, but can only be raced in the dry. I thought about using a different track but wanted to keep Eau Rouge in this comparison.

5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:14 One area where the ToCA Race Driver games gradually got worse was in pitstops. As there's such a wide variety of vehicles in the game, Codemasters saved the budget on animating the pitstops, and instead cross to this deathly dull map-and-positions menu. I've actually edited down the pitstop, as you look at this screen for 22 seconds otherwise!

6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 1:53 Zandvoort here, as Montreal isn't in the game. Crash damage is actually more impressive looking than Codemasters latest F1 games, with parts flying everywhere! Strangely, the computer controlled cars never seem to come off badly from you hitting them (check out how the yellow car here limps away with wobbly wheels, despite flipping hard into the barriers!).
