The nerve centre of Britain's newest aircraft carrier has begun its slow journey to be connected to the rest of the 65,000 tonne structure in Rosyth.

Employees at Portsmouth Naval Base watched as the Forward Island -- which includes the bridge of the Queen Elizabeth -- was placed on a barge.

The barge will set out on its real journey tomorrow -- to return in two years time in control of the world's most advanced aircraft carrier.

BAE Systems in Portsmouth said today has been an "important and iconic milestone" in the building programme.
