The man expected to lead the pullout of NATO troops from Afghanistan in the next two years has taken over ISAF Command.

General John Allen who has been in charge since July 2011, has handed over the baton to US Marine General Joseph Dunford Junior.

His first challenge will be to speed up the final transfer of responsibility for security from western troops to the Afghan police and army.

He aims to put them in control across the country this spring, ahead of the original plan to complete the handover in late summer.
