Welcome to Game Play. A series, of sorts, where I check out various video games and share my experiences with you.

Today we're taking a look at Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (Xbox One X).

This is an awesome experience. Especially for those of us who grew up playing games on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is a side-scrolling retro style game similar to Castlevania that immediately transports the player back to the glorious days of 8-bit graphics and sounds.

And it bloody works. The sights and sounds are amazing to witness once more after so many years of playing modern games. The music is absolutely a treat to listen to. To be sure, Bloodstained isn't the only retro game out there. Not by a long shot, but it's one of the first retro games I've tried, so it has that special feeling to me. You might have a different reaction going into it, however.

Bloodstained feels exactly like an old 8-bit video game from the past. The gameplay feels solid and somewhat similar to Ninja Gaiden for the NES and obviously Castlevania. It's intense with interesting enemy characters to defeat.

Along the way you'll get a host of allies to aid you. Each character offers a specific set of abilities that will come in handy in specific situations. You can easily switch between them with a press of a button.

The boss fights are interesting, fun and challenging while not being frustrating. Also, I have to say that fighting a single boss character in this era, where bosses only seem to conjure up hordes of minions before they finally go down, feels refreshing.

If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend you to do so. It's a blast from the past.

The game was recorded on the Xbox One X directly to an external HDD. No postwork has been done.
