Welcome to Game Play. A series, of sorts, where I check out various video games and share my experiences with you.

Today we're taking a look at Lichdom: Battlemage (PS4 Pro).

This is quite an interesting game, where the developers set out to answer a simple question: what if mages were nearly boundless by elements such as mana and health?

Born from that question was Lichdom: Battlemage, an action game set in a fantasy world where an evil cult is busy making the lives of everyone miserable. You play as either a female or male dragon (nope, not the animal but a human called dragon) who's been chosen by an elderly mage to seek out vengeance, destroy the cult and restore peace to the world. At least that's the setup at this stage of the game, but more details are continuosly being revealed as you play.

I like how the world slowly unfolds, but in terms of story, Lichdom: Battlemage won't offer (too) much to hold you captivated. It's clear that the developers put their focus on its gameplay instead. Although this isn't exactly a game made for people who (also) enjoy the narrative storytelling of video games, it would certainly have been nice to have just a bit more than what's offered.

However, in terms of gameplay the game should have shined. At least on paper. I've also tried this game on PC, where it runs great with only minor issues but it absolutely struggles on console. The framerate is inconsistent, to put it mildly, and the actual controls feel heavy and somewhat clunky. And yes, I did make more than a few mistakes so I can't blame the game for many of my shortcomings but the controls really aren't great.

The graphical performance is also subpar from what I've come to expect from any game running on CryEngine3. The game world and its various inhabitants look quite pixelated and dated. However, it must be said that the game was released back in 2014 so it's not exactly a new release but it definitely hasn't aged well.

Oh, and the lengthy loading times are no fun at all.

So is it a good game? Well. Truth be told, it can be a lot of fun and it's nice to play a game that's not trying to be the next Shakespearian masterpiece. Lichdom: Battlemage wants you to feel like a powerful mage, and it does so to a certain degree.

Since it's an older and maybe not the most popular game, you can find it discounted multiple places and online stores. Despite my issues with the game, I can actually recommend at least checking it out. It can be a cool experience if you pay the right price. And get it for PC.

The game was recorded on the Playstation 4 Pro onto an external HDD. No postwork has been done.
