Breath of Fire - Low Level Game Part V: Some Midgame Bosses I Found Worth Showing
Those who have played Breath of Fire know that there's a noticeable reduction in difficulty after Gremlin is defeated. Does that apply to a low level game? To some extent. Due to powerful equipment available too early and most of the bosses' inability to hurt you in any way, the only challenge will be surviving seven turns - that is, until you reach Zog. There are some interesting boss battles before that (which is why I put those recordings into this video), but nothing too challenging. A lot of important discoveries were made at this point though.
First of all, killing an enemy in less than seven turns results in more experience. Obviously, you don't want to do that in an LLG and should make an effort to make every easy battle longer (making some of them somewhat hard as a result). I found this too late and had messed up some of the battles. As a consequence, two of my guys gained one level too many. Not that bad really, and I didn't want to do a good chunk of the game all over again.
The first boss shown in this video is Toad. He's not particularly hard but Nina's levelled higher than the rest of the party (sans Ox), so we should have her killed at the end of the battle so that the experience levels are more or less even. Karn and Ryu can do the most damage with criticals and are out primary force, seeing how Ox is overlevelled when you get him (meaning he should be KO'd for a long time until everyone catches up to him in levels). That's okay, Ox's hours of glory are still ahead.
...which cannot be said about Bleu. You get her at lv. 19, her gaps between levels being really tiny - she should be KO'd for the whole game not to gain any more levels. And she's useless: she learns all the really good spells much later, she gets killed easily and her HP is too low. We wouldn't use her even if she joined at a lower level.
Pincher is the next boss I show. He can't survive anything and dies far too quickly! But we must withstand seven turns of him so as not to gain any extra experience. And that's why things get tougher here. Pincher can cast a Thunder Bolt spell, damaging each character for 95 damage! For some of them, like Gobi, that's enough to be killed (Gobi is terrible, he's only there because he needs to gain the necessary experience as soon as possible so that we can forget about him altogether for the really challenging endgame battles). One walkthrough suggests that he never casts the spell twice in a row, but that's wrong. He can, and he did once, though not in this recording. A hard boss, made hard only by the necessity to wait out seven turns.
The following battles were laughably easy. Even in the last battle shown in the video, you see me defending until everybody is in ATK Up state. Clear sign that this is yet another battle I could've ended in less than seven turns.
The boss is weak to the darkness element, which is why Ryu and Karn can seriously hurt him with their Dark Daggers (DarkDR).
As you can see from my menu, I no longer kill off party members outside of the active four. The reason for that is my discovery that the experience is equally distributed between every character who is alive, active or not, meaning I shouldn't kill anybody but Bleu. Convenient, huh.
I'll should Mothro and Mote next. Those were both interesting and worth showing. Then Zog and other fascinating endgame battles.
