Building a Platformer in Godot – Chill Sunday Morning Coding | Ep. 26
In this video, I begin creating a platformer in Godot during my 10th stream of learning game development with this amazing platform. After a brief catch-up (I missed last week!), I reflect on past projects, like Minesweeper, Pong, and Breakout, before diving into the planning and building of a practice platformer. This marks the beginning of a new journey as we explore features and mechanics unique to platformer games.
I walk you through the process of setting up a basic game scene, creating platforms, and getting a character on-screen with movement controls. We cover how to implement physics and collisions using static bodies, sprites, and collision shapes. You’ll see me experiment with Godot’s tools and discuss plans for adding cool features like animation players, saving systems, dynamic music, level maps, NPC interactions, and more. I even dig into some template customization to streamline future projects.
Notable moments include figuring out how to make a camera follow the player, managing gameplay resets with a 'dead zone' mechanism when characters fall off platforms, and more. Along the way, I share thoughts, problem-solving approaches, and reflections, making this both a learning and creative experience.
Whether you're new to Godot or an experienced developer, this chill session could offer tips, inspiration, or camaraderie in the journey of shaping game ideas into reality. Let’s build a platformer together!
