Cannon Fodder – Super Nintendo – Intro & Gameplay Missions 1 – 4 (PAL Exclusive) [4K50]
A port of Sensible Software's hugely popular Amiga title that was released in 1993. Cannon Fodder is best remember as a fast moving point and click shooter with a rather dark satirical take on war and a rather memorable title song. This is a game that only Sensible Software could have pulled off merging humour with in places an anti-war message. Most noticeable the graves that appear of fallen characters and the limited supply of war volunteers lose too many and no one wants to fight. The mission tag lines are also a mixture of comedy, film parodies and digs at aspects of war.
The game also kicked up a bit of a fuss and at the time with The Royal British Legion who objected to the Poppy Flower being used in-game. In more modern time the flowers use itself is the subject of controversy, both for its plant family ties to the drug Heroin and the drugs trade and others question what it actually supposed to stand for these days as some see it more as a political symbol than one just for remembrance.
How does this SNES port compare to the Amiga version, aside from a few cuts it's largely all here. Graphics and sound quality have taken a slight hit. This port runs at a lower resolution so less of the map is shown on screen compared tot he Mega Drive and Amiga versions. Some mission names have been changed largely for censorship so “Bugger me it's cold” has become “Blast it's Cold”. Some of the enemy death animations are gone such as the coughing man and sadly so is the theme song “War has never been so much fun”. One of the better PAL only SNES titles, even if the box does show two screenshots of the Amiga sequel on it. Which didn't get a console release.
