Our next mission is for the Black Fleet again, and a continuation... Except... What do you mean I have to fly a Lyran ship?
A Hole in Time and Space Pt 2
Black Fleet has plans for that Lyran ship you captured in the previous mission. Fly it and escort a Lyran freighter we have captured. The freighter is going to kamikaze the Hydran starbase. Make sure it succeeds. This will drive a deep wedge between the Hydrans and the Lyrans. When you succeed, come back through the wormhole.
NOTE: I've tried this about 10-15 times. It's impossible, I tell you, even on Captain's level of difficulty.
Anyway, the idea basically is, follow closely behind the freighter, be a distraction, then when the freighter rams the starbase, go yellow alert (drop all weapons) and make a run for it.
Except it never works out that way. Hydrans start approaching closely with their Stinger fighters, and their fusion beam just shreds the ship, or their ship fires the fusion beam which drops your shields, then their fighters follow the ship in and blow you apart with gatling phasers and/or fusion beams. Or they manage to slow you to like speed 5 due to massive engine damage, then they hit you with some hellbores and you go pop. If you charge out in front of the freighter trying to distract, ONE ship may follow you but its fighters will continue to shoot at the ship. AND there are TWO MORE Hydran cruisers near the base.
I consulted multiple strategy guides (including the one I wrote myself 20 years ago), and most of them claim if you distract one Hydran ship the freighter may make it through. It can't now. Maybe the AI is smarter due to more CPU cycles available, maybe timing is different now, but this mission is impossible. I've tried a dozen times.
After watching the freighter come tantalizingly close, its shield boundary almost touching the shield of the starbase, then kaboom, for the umpteenth time, I decided to accept the disgrace and continue rather than try again.
No, the HQ was NOT pleased.
